Shere Parish Council is a Quality Council

NEWSLETTER - SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2008

Traffic Working Group

Mr. Bob Weldon Gamble, Borough Manager of the Surrey Fire and Rescue Service, addressed the meeting to express his concerns about difficulties of access for fire engines to certain areas in Shere. This is due to the presence of parked vehicles, often parked inconsiderately. The locations which give particular concern are - turning into Middle Street from Gomshall Lane, the Square generally, the turning up into Church Hill from Church Lane and Lower Street. It was pointed out to Mr. Weldon Gamble that it appeared that finally Shere is going to get its long awaited public car park and it is hoped that the situation will improve. If not further measures will have to be considered and the Shere Traffic Working Group is to look at the issue.

Another matter to be discussed by the Traffic Working Group is the continuing problem of snarl ups occurring at the junction of Lower Street with Middle Street. Many alternatives have been discussed, the latest being an area of crossed hatching on the road to indicate that the area is to be kept clear. Surrey County Council have now agreed to do this but have insisted that the lines be yellow which neither the Conservation Officer nor the Parish Council are keen on.

Goose Green, Gomshall

The Parish Council owns two areas of open land at Goose Green one on either side of the road. The smaller area on the east of the road is adjacent to two residential properties. For reasons of security the owner of this property has erected a gate across the Council’s drive. The Parish Council is happy with this as the gate will be open during the day and residents should not be deterred from using this area of land for recreational enjoyment. A notice confirming public access will be placed on the gate.

Claimed footpath, Holmbury St. Mary

The question of whether or not the footpath adjacent to 3 and 4 Feldemore Cottages is a public right of way is to be resolved at a public inquiry to be held in Holmbury St. Mary Village on 21st January 2009. Interested parties are welcome to attend and a notice giving further details will be placed on the Council’s notice board adjacent to the Village Green in due course.

Recycling facilities

I have been asked to include in my report the following statement from Guildford Borough Council:

The Recycling team at Guildford Borough Council are pleased to inform you that there is now a recycling bank for plastic bottles and cans at Gomshall Railway Station. We hope that this will be particularly useful for those residents in the area that we are unable to provide a doorstep collection of this material. The banks that were in the car park of the Black Horse public house have also been relocated to this new site so that resident can do all of their recycling at the same place. Our thanks to First Great Western Trains for allowing us to provide this facility on their land.

Next meeting

The next meeting of the Parish Council will be held on Friday 17th October 2008 at 8 p.m. in Tanyard Hall, 30 Station Road, Gomshall.

Readers are reminded that the public can observe all Council and Committee meetings and there is always an adjournment during each meeting to enable the public to address the Council/Committee or to ask questions. The meetings are usually held upstairs as this room is the larger of the two. However, if a resident, who is unable to access the upstairs room, wishes to attend then the Council is willing to move the meeting to the downstairs room. However, prior notice would be appreciated if possible.
